Buying and selling a car safely
With these checks you buy with peace of mind and avoid being scammed.
Before you buy
- Do a licence plate check: do the make, model and year match the ad? When does the APK (MOT) expire? What is the odometer judgement?
- View the car in daylight, take a test drive and ask for the service book and invoices.
- If in doubt, have an independent garage inspect the car.
- Check that the VIN on the car matches the registration document.
Paying and transferring ownership
- Never pay in advance for a car you have not seen.
- Transfer the car together, for example at an RDW-approved counter or post office, and pay at that moment.
- Arrange insurance on the day the car is registered in your name.
As a seller
- Do not let strangers take a test drive alone and keep the keys with you.
- Only hand over the car once the money is really in your account.
- Never click payment links or “verification links” from unknown buyers.
